In May 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a division of the World Health Organization (WHO), classified mobile phone use as a Class 2b carcinogen, having a ‘possibly carcinogenic’ effect.
The studies were assessed by a working group of 31 scientists from 14 countries identified that there was 40% increased risk of developing brain cancer associated with the heavy use of mobile phones IRAC press release, 2011
The UK National Health Service website gives this further information on the risks of brain cancer:
“To put this 40% risk increase into context, the latest incidence figures from Cancer Research UK indicate that a man has a lifetime risk of developing a brain tumour (any type) of 1 in 133, and women have a 1 in 185 risk. Gliomas (of which there are four subtypes) are said to account for about half of all brain tumours.” NHS News 2011
